Suicide attack outside Kabul cricket stadium kills 3

At least three people have been killed in a suicide attack aimed at targeting a cricket stadium in downtown Kabul Wednesday, an official confirmed.

Basir Mujahed, spokesman for the police in Kabul, told Anadolu Agency, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives when stopped at the first ring of security outside Alakozay International Cricket Stadium.

Mujahed said one policeman and two civilians got killed and five others wounded in the incident.

Tens of thousands of cricket lovers were present in the stadium when the incident took place.

The stadium in Kabul is hosting a number of foreign and national cricket players for the popular Shpageeza T20 Cricket Championship these days.

Cricket has gained phenomenal popularity in war-riddled Afghanistan with the national team cruising to gain international status and joining the top 10 teams in the world within years of arrival of the game in the country.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has vowed to go ahead with the popular event after the bombing.
