John F. Kelly has been named the White House Chief of Staff on Friday after Reince Priebus resigned the post.
Priebus resigned privately Thursday, according to media reports. He issued a statement after the announcement and approved of his replacement.
"I will continue to serve as a strong supporter of the President's agenda and policies. I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me."
The shake-up at the White House occurs a day after a very public and profane outburst by the administration's new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, against Priebus. That followed tweets and an interview in which Scaramucci appeared to link Priebus to leaks from the White House.
Kelly is "a Great American and a Great Leader. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security," Trump said in a series of tweets.
"Reince is a good man," Trump told reporters as he returned from a domestic trip.
Kelly formerly commanded coalition troops in Iraq from 2008 to 2009.
