Hollywood actor Johnny Depp caused a stir late Thursday when he joked during in an appearance at Glastonbury festival about assassinating US President Donald Trump.
"When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?" Depp can be heard saying in footage shared by the BBC and the NME music magazine.
Apparently aware that his joke would be seen as controversial, he added, "By the way, this is going to be in the press. It will be horrible."
The 54-year-old, beset by scandals connected to his finances and personal life in recent months, was speaking at a screening of his 2004 costume drama "The Libertine" at the music festival in England.
Depp is one of several celebrities to joke about killing Trump.
Comedian Kathy Griffin lost her job at CNN after posing in a photo with what appeared to be a mask of Trump's severed head, and rapper Snoop Dogg stirred public outrage by pretending to shoot the president in a video for the song "BADBADNOTGOOD."
Depp's comments may have referred to the assassination of US president Abraham Lincoln, who was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington in 1865.
