Three PKK terrorists were killed in an airstrike in southeastern Siirt province on Friday, according to a regional governor's office.

In a statement, the Siirt Governor's Office said gendarmerie and police units carried out the airstrike in Cevrimtepe village in the province's Baykan district.

The slain terrorists were suspected to be behind the assassination attempt against Baykan district head Mehmet Kocabey on July 7 and the martyrdom of Hakkari's Cukurca district gendarmerie station commander, Staff Sgt. Yakup Akdag, on July 24.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015.

Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians, including women and children.
