More than 1,000 foreign nationals were detained by security forces as they tried to enter Turkey illegally, the Turkish General Staff said Monday.

During an operation on Sunday the forces nabbed 926 Syrians, 28 Bulgarians, 18 Greek and three Iraqi nationals, said a statement.

At least 50 people who were crossing into Syria from Turkey were detained at the border.

Also, a person trying to cross into Greece from Turkey was caught.

Turkey has enhanced security measures along its border with Syria and Iraq in recent years to prevent illegal crossings. Ankara last year erected 330 kilometers (205 miles) of walls along its borders with the two countries.
